What is Behavioural Economics?
Behavioural Economics studies how psychological, cognitive, emotional and social factors influence economic decision-making. Unlike traditional economics, which assumes people make perfectly rational choices all the time, behavioural economics recognises that individuals often make irrational, biased and suboptimal decisions because of heuristics and contextual influences. The field combines these insights with traditional economic models to better understand why people make certain choices and how their behaviour can be influenced.
What is Behavioural Science?
Behavioural Science is an interdisciplinary field that studies human behaviour through systematic and scientific methods. Drawing from psychology, sociology, economics, neuroscience and anthropology, it seeks to understand why people act, make decisions and form habits - often deviating from what traditional rational models predict. It allows for the formation of strategies that can be used to guide behaviour towards desirable outcomes.
Our Approach
Our approach is built upon the psychological Dual-Systems Theory. In which, human decision-making is controlled by two powerful Systems: System 1 and System 2.
- System 1 is responsible for all automatic decisions, functions with little or no cognitive effort and has no self-control.
- System 2 is effortful and intentional, responsible for cognitive effort and allows for complex and logical decisions.
Through the strategic application of our interventions, we are able to take advantage of the two systems, leveraging behavioural insights to affect change in specific behaviours.
Our interventions largely focus on manipulating the environment individuals are in, the stimuli they receive or the information they are aware of to change behaviour.
